Accueil DMA Department of mathematics and applications The department of mathematics and applications is both a teaching department and a research center. The department offers a 3-year training programme It is centered on mathematics and their applications, but students are encouraged to take advantage of the great interdisciplinary environment offered by the ENS. The department is also a research center The Department of Mathematics and Applications at Ecole Normale Supérieure also aims at carrying mathematical research, both at a national and an international level.

Studies at DMA

The Department of Mathematics offers a three-year training of high scientific level. It is centered on mathematics and their applications, but students are encouraged to take advantage of the great interdisciplinary environment offered by the ENS.

First year

Students are registered in the third year of licence (L3). They follow lectures from the first year of master (M1). They also attend courses in computer sciences, physics, economics or biology. A so-called first-year thesis is written at the end of the year.

Second year

Students are registered in the first year of master (M1). They also attend workshop groups, advanced courses from a research level provided by specialists. During the second semester, students that are sufficiently advanced can go for a long-term internship.

Third and fourth years

Third year is dedicated to the second year of Master’s (M2). In parallel, students can go for an internship, attend a workshop group or advanced courses. During their fourth year, they write an end-of-diploma thesis (Mémoire de Diplôme) and present a research topic.

How to reach the teaching secretary office ?

The Department of mathematics and applications is located in the premises of the ENS,  45 rue d’Ulm, 75005 Paris.

The teaching secretary office lies in Espace Verdier office V8  :

    • from outside walk along Pasteur courtyard then make a left turn under the  porch,
    • from inside go towards the B stairway then make a right turn.

Admission

There are three possibilities to be admitted to study mathematics at the ENS.

ENS admission exam

This competitive exam recruits mainly after a 2 years training in preparatory classes to elite schools, designated as the CPGE. Independent candidates have to prove that they graduated out of secondary education with the Baccalauréat or an equivalent diploma. Students having acquired a diploma rating up to 240 ECTS units are not allowed to participate.

International selection

Each year the École normale supérieure organizes an international selection allowing about thirty of the most promising international students to follow a two or three-year programme at the ENS. They receive a monthly stipend of approximately 1,000 Euros and can rent accommodation on the ENS campus.

Written application

The Department of Mathematics and Applications at the ENS is recruiting 6 to 7 students who are passionate about mathematics and wish to complete the ENS diploma. This offer is targeted to students at the L2 or L3 level, and who are not participating in the same year in the ENS admission exam. The successful applicants have 3 years to obtain the ENS diploma.
